Have you ever heard that listening to classical music will help you reach peak performance while working? It actually may be less about the type of music, and more about the BPM, or beats per minute, of the song.

According to Entrepreneur.com, listening to any song with 50–80 BPM will put your brain into an alpha state, in which you will be more relaxed and open to learning new topics. This state is also associated with memory and imagination. Typically when we are awake we are in a beta mental state, where we are highly alert and less able to achieve deep focus. You’ll know when you have switched to an alpha state when you:

“Find yourself deep in thought and not really hearing the music at all… you’re tuning out while being tuned in.”

- Entrepreneur.com

Your goal is to reach a point where you can’t even hear the music — it’s just helping you zone in on your work. Figuring out the BPM for each of the songs on your playlist is definitely a tedious task. That’s why I recommend visiting Jog.fm, where you can search by song, artist, or BPM to curate your own perfect focus playlist.

Check out the songs below that range from 50–80 BPM that I found on Jog.fm and see if you already have them on your work playlist!

The Lion Sleeps Tonight (Wimoweh) by The Tokens

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen

Here by Alessia Cara

Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran

We Can’t Stop by Miley Cyrus

Skyfall by Adele

Lucy in The Sky with Diamonds by The Beatles
